There is an alarming trend of pregnant patients being denied emergency care, with devastating consequences. This issue has escalated since the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, and the Supreme Court is currently considering arguments that could further weaken patient protections. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTLA) was designed to prevent such patient neglect. However, the lack of clear penalties for violations in 2022 has left room for hospitals to disregard their obligations without fear of repercussions. It is crucial to enforce stringent penalties for hospitals that fail to provide necessary care to pregnant patients. This is not just about Idaho, but also other states with strict abortion laws. We must ensure that the rights and health of pregnant individuals are prioritized over political agendas.
