No Loyalty Oaths to Elected Officials

To: Justices Court

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

February 9

I am writing to express my concerns about recent calls for loyalty oaths to President Donald Trump, which I believe undermine our democracy and the integrity of our institutions. As your constituent, I urge you to stand against these efforts and reaffirm our commitment to the Constitution over any individual leader. The United States was founded on the principle of rejecting absolute power. Our system of government ensures that no one person can amass unchecked authority. The oath sworn by public officials is a pledge to defend the Constitution—not loyalty to an individual. Demanding loyalty to one person undermines the democratic values that protect the rights of all Americans. Loyalty to a leader, particularly President Trump, fosters a dangerous personality cult. History shows that such oaths invite blind allegiance and erode accountability, allowing the leader’s will to override the law. We cannot allow this to become the norm. Loyalty to the Constitution ensures that power remains with the people, not a single figure. Our democracy is strongest when citizens unite in their commitment to the Constitution. Loyalty oaths to President Trump divide the public and force citizens to choose between their values and their allegiance to one person. The legal implications of loyalty oaths are also troubling. The Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and all public officials are bound by it. Loyalty should be to the office of the President, not the person holding the office. Placing loyalty to one individual above all else risks undermining the rule of law. I urge you to protect our democracy and the rights of every American. The strength of our nation lies in its commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law. We must reject loyalty oaths that prioritize one leader over the law. Thank you for your attention to this issue. I look forward to hearing your stance on this important matter.
