A Voter’s Concerns About House Leadership and Accountability

To: Sen. Warner, Sen. Kaine

From: A constituent in Portsmouth, VA

November 5

There are many concerns about the prospect of Hakeem Jeffries becoming Speaker of the House. I do not believe his approach reflects the urgency that motivated many Democratic voters to turn out in this election. I encourage you to speak with your colleagues in the House about supporting a speaker who will prioritize both affordability and meaningful accountability. Many of us are not seeking revenge. We are seeking accountability. Addressing the cost of living and holding leaders responsible for abuses of power are goals that can, and must, be pursued together. Over the past two years, I have watched with deep concern as the Republican administration has damaged our institutions and undermined public trust. Repairing that damage and protecting our democracy will require sustained effort, courage, and a willingness to meet this moment with urgency. Friends overseas have also reminded me that America’s political direction has consequences far beyond our borders. What happens here influences democratic institutions and political movements around the world. We need to demonstrate that our system is strong enough to confront authoritarianism, recover from its harms, and hold those responsible accountable. Future leaders must understand that abuses of power and attacks on democracy will not go unchecked. I ask you to advocate for leadership that treats these responsibilities with the seriousness they deserve. I look forward to seeing the positive changes you bring to our nation.
