I am writing to express my strong opposition to Ohio Senate Bill 56, which I believe disregards the clear will of Ohio voters. The bill attempts to alter critical aspects of the cannabis legalization framework, undermining the democratic process and the principles of voter-approved legislation. In 2023, Ohioans voted overwhelmingly to legalize adult-use cannabis. This decision was made after a thoughtful and informed public debate, with the understanding that personal cultivation rights, reasonable access, and social equity initiatives would be central to the new law. Senate Bill 56, however, seeks to limit those rights by reducing the number of plants that individuals can cultivate at home and imposing arbitrary restrictions on THC concentrations, among other changes. The most concerning aspect of this bill is its dismissal of the Cannabis Social Equity and Jobs Program. Voters supported the inclusion of this program to address the disproportionate impact of the War on Drugs on marginalized communities. By eliminating this program, Senate Bill 56 disregards the voices of those who have fought for justice and equity in Ohio. I am also troubled by the bill’s restrictions on public consumption and its attempt to narrow the scope of personal freedom for responsible cannabis users. This bill goes beyond what is necessary to ensure public safety and unnecessarily penalizes individuals who are abiding by the new law. Ohio voters clearly expressed their desire for fair and equitable cannabis legalization. Senate Bill 56, in its current form, undermines that decision and fails to reflect the values of the Ohio electorate. I urge you to oppose this bill and respect the voice of the people who voted for change. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
