Urge oversight of OPM data system access restrictions

To: Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd, Rep. McDowell

From: A constituent in Concord, NC

February 4

I am concerned by the reports of Elon Musk's team restricting career civil servants' access to important federal workforce data systems at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Locking out experienced government employees and revoking their visibility into these systems containing sensitive personal information on millions of federal workers raises serious cybersecurity risks and enables actions without proper oversight. This appears to be part of an aggressive effort to remake the federal government workforce without regard for institutional knowledge, continuity of operations, or preserving vital systems and data integrity. Sidelining career professionals who understand how these complex systems work in favor of loyalists installed by political figures is extremely concerning from a governance perspective. I urge you to push for transparency into the actions being taken at OPM and to ensure there are safeguards in place to protect government data and IT systems from being compromised or misused during this upheaval. Experienced civil servants must maintain access required to do their jobs securely managing this sensitive workforce data. Sweeping changes demand rigorous oversight to prevent abuse of power and data breaches that could victimize federal employees. Strong institutional controls and accountability measures are needed.
