Please oppose sb72

To: Sen. Williams, Rep. Bangert

From: A constituent in Hazelwood, MO

December 4

I strongly oppose SB72, which would create the offense of "trespass by an illegal alien" and impose harsh penalties, including imprisonment without eligibility for probation or parole. This draconian measure not only criminalizes the very presence of undocumented individuals in Missouri but also incentivizes bounty hunting and vigilantism against this vulnerable population. The proposed $1,000 reward for reporting individuals who are subsequently arrested as "illegal aliens" is a clear invitation for abuse, racial profiling, and harassment. Furthermore, the establishment of a "Missouri Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program" is a disturbing overreach that would empower private citizens to detain and apprehend others based solely on their perceived immigration status. This bill runs counter to American values of due process, equal protection under the law, and human rights. It would foster an environment of fear, mistrust, and division within our communities. Immigration is a complex issue that deserves thoughtful, humane solutions, not knee-jerk policies that scapegoat and dehumanize people. I urge you to reject SB72 and instead pursue comprehensive immigration reform that upholds our nation's principles of justice, compassion, and respect for human dignity. Punitive measures like this bill only breed more problems and do nothing to address the root causes of unauthorized immigration.
