“Opposition to Bills Undermining Democracy (HB 66, HB 64, SB 58)”

To: Rep. Potts, Sen. Jarvis

From: A constituent in Lexington, NC

February 8

I am writing to express my strong opposition to NC House Bills 66 and 64, as well as Senate Bill 58. These bills pose significant threats to democratic processes and governmental accountability in North Carolina. House Bill 66 seeks to reduce the early voting period, a change that could suppress voter turnout, particularly among working-class and marginalized communities. Early voting is essential to ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their schedules or circumstances, have the opportunity to participate in elections. Reducing early voting days risks increasing Election Day congestion and disenfranchising voters. House Bill 64 and Senate Bill 58 raise similar concerns regarding democratic governance. SB 58, in particular, would limit the ability of the Attorney General to challenge federal executive orders, undermining the state’s autonomy and its system of checks and balances. It is crucial that North Carolina retain its ability to hold federal actions accountable when necessary to protect the interests of its residents. I urge you to oppose these bills and to protect North Carolina’s commitment to free and fair democratic processes.
