Oppose HR-8281, Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or the SAVE Act
To: Sen. Lee, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Curtis
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
April 14
The SAVE Act is an unnecessary overreach that could disenfranchise eligible voters and infringe on states' rights to manage elections. While intended to prevent non-citizens from voting, experts confirm incidents of non-citizen voting are exceedingly rare. The act would create barriers by requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register, which many citizens lack easy access to. It fails to specify what supplemental documents states must accept for applicants whose current legal name doesn't match their birth certificates, potentially blocking numerous married women and others who have changed names from voting. This federal mandate undermines state authority over elections and makes voter registration unnecessarily burdensome without evidence of a widespread issue it aims to solve. Upholding voting rights and election integrity does not necessitate such a far-reaching and ambiguous federal law. States should maintain authority over their voter registration processes.
