We need regulation and accountability on AI tools now. The content deep fakes and phishing attacks can already create is astounding. We don't need any more examples of how people can be manipulated. It also provides cover for our political leaders to just believably say something unpopular they said or did was AI. Possibly the worst outcome is that people stop believing anything they see, especially if it does not align to what they already want to believe. This will make it so much harder to make positive change in the world and protect the most vulnerable among us. We need to hold the companies that created these tools responsible for creating the solution to protect our reality and facts. They need to be accountable for making their tools secure and detectable when used. They did not get our permission to create tools to displace our jobs and manipulate us with false realities. We need real legislation now. Not in 10 years. Plenty of insiders in the AI world have been sounding the alarm already.
