An Open Letter

To: Rep. Hurd

From: A constituent in Montrose, CO

July 15

I am writing as a concerned Colorado constituent to ask whether you intend to sign the pledge of support reportedly being circulated by Victor Marx among Republican candidates for Colorado governor. I have seen reports that the pledge would require candidates to support Mr. Marx and refrain from publicly criticizing him. Given the concerns that some Colorado Republicans have raised about Mr. Marx’s background and candidacy, I believe such a pledge would be inappropriate and contrary to the open exchange of ideas that voters deserve. I respectfully encourage you not to sign any pledge that would limit your ability to speak candidly, evaluate candidates on their merits, or express honest concerns during the course of a campaign. Colorado voters are best served when elected officials and candidates remain free to exercise independent judgment and engage in open debate. Thank you for your time and consideration. I would appreciate knowing your position on this matter.
