Oppose the Dangerous and Disastrous Omnibus Bill
To: Rep. Messmer
From: A constituent in Mount Vernon, IN
July 1
I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent to urge you to oppose the current Republican-led omnibus bill making its way through Congress. This bill is both fiscally irresponsible and morally indefensible. While proponents use budgetary gimmicks to claim the bill will only cost $442 billion, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates it will actually add $4.2 trillion to the national debt. That’s not just misleading—it’s a betrayal of honest governance. Even more troubling are the bill’s staggering increases in funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement:
• $45 billion for detention (compared to ICE’s current $3.4 billion budget)
• $14.4 billion for transportation and removal (up from $750 million)
• $8 billion for new hires and retention
This funding gives ICE more money for migrant detention than the entire U.S. Bureau of Prisons receives. The Department of Homeland Security’s social media post depicting ICE alligators in the Everglades is grotesque and inhumane. It reflects the heartless ideology driving this bill.
Meanwhile, the Senate’s proposed offsets are devastating:
• $930 billion in cuts to Medicaid
• Additional cuts to Medicare and the Affordable Care Act
According to the CBO, this would result in 11.8 million Americans losing health insurance. This is unacceptable. Healthcare systems, especially in states like Louisiana, are already warning of catastrophic consequences.
This bill is being rushed through despite widespread public opposition. The fact that 50 senators voted to advance it—and then the Vice President broke the tie —shows how controversial and divisive it is.
I urge you to stand with your constituents, not with fear-driven party leadership. As some of your colleagues have shown, there is courage in resisting a reckless agenda, even in the face of political threats.
Please oppose this dangerous bill and make it clear that you will not support policies that enrich ICE, deepen our debt, and take healthcare away from millions.
