I am writing to unequivocally condemn government actions and executive orders that target, detain, or forcibly relocate homeless individuals and marginalized groups under the pretense of “treatment” or “public safety.” There is no legal or moral justification for detaining people against their will, particularly when these tactics serve only to infringe upon basic civil rights, due process, and human dignity.
Such measures echo the worst abuses in history and represent an active threat to our democracy. Evidence and longstanding constitutional protections make clear:
No one should be subject to loss of liberty or forced detention without robust due process.
The manufacture of emergencies to restrict rights or suppress voter participation is fundamentally un-American.
Effective, humane policy addresses the root causes of homelessness and social distress, not through coercion or punishment but through access to housing, mental health care, job opportunities, and legal representation.
I demand you:
Publicly reject and oppose all initiatives to detain, relocate, or otherwise target vulnerable populations through executive action or legislation.
Defend due process, constitutional rights, and ensure all measures affecting civil liberties have full oversight and transparency.
Advocate for and implement solutions based on evidence—“housing first” models, healthcare access, and economic reforms—rather than punitive approaches.
Failure to do so will erode public trust, escalate social harm, and expose your office to legal and moral scrutiny. I urge you to stand on the side of justice, humanity, and the rule of law.
