INDEPENDENT VOTER I am confused. Why has Trump gutted CISA? What CISA does CISA’s basic mission is to protect the nation’s critical infrastructure from cyberattacks and other threats. Its responsibilities include: Cybersecurity: Helps government agencies, businesses, hospitals, utilities and other organizations defend against hackers, ransomware and other cyber threats. Critical infrastructure: Works to protect things such as the electrical grid, telecommunications, transportation, water systems, financial systems and pipelines. Election security: Helps state and local election officials protect voting systems and election infrastructure from cyber threats. Threat information: Shares information about cyber threats and vulnerabilities with government and private organizations. Emergency response: Helps organizations respond to major cyber incidents and recover from them. Physical security: Works with organizations to reduce risks from terrorism, natural disasters and other threats to critical infrastructure. CISA generally did not investigate or prosecute crimes. That’s primarily the role of agencies such as the FBI and Department of Justice. CISA’s role is more like protecting and helping defend the infrastructure, while law-enforcement agencies investigate criminal activity. They coordinated heavily with State election officials. Trump fired the Director Chris Krebs of CISA on November 3rd, after the 2020 election. A life-long Republican, Krebs and his agency made the mistake of publically stating: “The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history.” They also specifically stated: “There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.” That directly contradicted President Trump’s claims that widespread fraud had occurred and that voting machines had switched or deleted votes. Trump subsequently announced that Krebs had been terminated, saying Krebs’s statements about election security were “highly inaccurate” and that there had been massive improprieties and fraud. So why is Congress not supporting CISA?
