An Open Letter

To: Sen. Lee, Rep. Moore, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

April 16

It’s time to stand up and defend the United States Constitution. The Supreme Court, the highest ruling court in this country, has unanimously ruled to have Kilmar Agrego Garcia returned from the El Salvador concentration camp that he was wrongly sent to. You may argue that it isn’t a concentration camp but you would be wrong. It is a facility that is vastly overcrowded where we are sending people without the due process they are guaranteed to in the Constitution. If Mr Garcia had been given his due process the mistake, that the Trump administration has acknowledged was a mistake, would have been corrected *before* he was sent to the camp. This administration and the representatives supporting its decision to not comply with the unanimous Supreme Court ruling is utterly disgusting and proves that, for them, following party lines outweighs our Constitution and our democracy. They are willing to sell out our country. They are willing to sell out our people. If this is allowed to stand, if the President of the United States is allowed to disregard the Supreme Court and the United States Constitution, we are no longer a democracy. We are a fascist regime. And then who’s next to be sent to an El Salvador concentration camp? There’s already been a hot mic incident where the president has talked of sending “home grown” to camps in El Salvador. The very definition of that term is anyone born in the United States and a legal citizen. So which home growns are next to be sent? Criminals? People like Mr Garcia, who was a mistake but is just being left to rot? Dissidents, like me? People of color? LGBTQ+? Autistics? The elderly so they can’t receive social security that is rightly theirs? The disabled for that same reason? We know who the home grown being sent to camps has been in the past. This is a slippery slope and your decision on what to do will decide if our country survives this atrocity or not. Please be the leader you were elected to be. Please uphold the Constitution like you vowed, under oath, to do. Your constituents are begging you to take a stand against an administration that is defying the very laws they promised to uphold. The people are getting tired of the absurdity that is happening in Washington. The United States has become not only a laughing stock but also something that isn’t to be trusted. None of this is patriotic. It’s a disgrace.
