The sentences handed down to protesters outside the Prairieland detention center near Dallas are a grotesque misuse of prosecutorial power, and I want you to act to stop them. Ines Soto received 50 years for attending a demonstration with fireworks. Benjamin Song received 100 years. Daniel Sanchez Estrada received 30 years despite not even attending the protest. These are not sentences proportionate to justice — they are meant to terrorize anyone who dares to protest.
The government built this case on political literature found in defendants' homes and the presence of first aid kits, calling them evidence of terrorist conspiracy. Antifa is not an organization — it is a political stance — and prosecuting people as terrorists for holding anti-fascist views sets a precedent that should alarm every American who values the First Amendment. Defense attorneys argued these protesters were exercising their Second Amendment rights at a lawful demonstration in support of detained immigrants.
I want you to publicly condemn these sentences, support any legislative effort to rein in the use of terrorism charges against protesters, and call for a review of this case. What happened in that courtroom is a warning shot at free speech itself.
