Veto HB2026 to Protect Arizona's Water Supply
To: Gov. Hobbs
From: A verified voter in Tucson, AZ
April 13
Veto HB2026. This bill creates a dangerous loophole that lets developers bypass assured water supply requirements, putting Arizona families at risk.
Gail Griffin's HB2026 is a giveaway to developers who want to build without proving they have the water to support new communities. Arizona has less water now than it did 20 years ago. That's not a political talking point, it's a fact that should guide every water policy decision. Developers need to accept this reality instead of lobbying to gut consumer protections so they can pump more water than they're entitled to.
Assured water supply requirements exist for a reason. They protect homebuyers from purchasing property that may not have reliable water in the future. Weakening these standards doesn't create more water. It just shifts the risk from developers onto families who will be left holding the bag when wells run dry. Arizona cannot afford to prioritize short-term development profits over long-term water security.
