I am writing as a concerned Connecticut resident to strongly oppose the recently proposed bill introduced by Senator Bernie Moreno, which would require all dual citizens of the United States to either renounce their foreign citizenship or renounce their U.S. citizenship within one year.
This legislation threatens fundamental American values. Our country was built by immigrants, strengthened by diversity, and shaped by people who carried more than one cultural identity. Forcing millions of Americans to abandon a part of who they are or risk losing their rights and being labeled as aliens in a federal database is not only discriminatory but deeply un-American.
Dual citizenship does not dilute loyalty. It reflects the global, interconnected nature of modern life. This bill would cause enormous personal, financial, and emotional harm to millions of law-abiding residents and citizens. It could also create dangerous grounds for targeting people based solely on heritage, birthplace, or family ties, even when they fully and proudly consider the United States their home.
I urge you to do everything within your power to oppose this bill and ensure that it does not move forward. It is crucial that our elected officials take a stand to protect the freedoms, rights, and dignity of all Americans, especially now, when immigrants and multicultural families are increasingly vulnerable.
I ask that you speak out publicly, vote against any measure resembling this proposal, and advocate strongly for the safety and liberty of dual citizens in Connecticut and across the country.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I hope you will defend the diverse communities that make our state and nation strong.
