Urgent Action Needed: Protect Privacy and Reproductive Rights
To: Justices Court
From: A constituent in Madera, CA
October 9
The recent case of a Texas woman being investigated after exercising her right to choose has exposed a dangerous intersection of invasive surveillance technology and the erosion of reproductive rights. This alarming incident demands your immediate attention and action.
Two weeks after a woman in Texas had an abortion, law enforcement initiated a "death investigation" using a vast network of over 83,000 automated license plate reading cameras. This search extended across state lines, even into jurisdictions where abortion remains legal. The scale and reach of this surveillance are deeply troubling, especially given that Sheriff Adam King and Flock Safety, the technology provider, initially mischaracterized the timing and nature of the investigation.
This case starkly illustrates how law enforcement and tech companies can track individuals without their knowledge or consent, posing a severe threat to privacy rights. The sharing of automatic license plate reader data across state lines not only puts abortion seekers at risk but may also violate privacy laws in certain states.
As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to protect both privacy rights and reproductive freedom. We need legislation that restricts the use of surveillance technologies like automated license plate readers, especially for tracking individuals exercising their reproductive rights. Additionally, we must strengthen protections for women's right to choose at the federal level to prevent such egregious overreach by local law enforcement.
The clock is ticking. With each passing day, more individuals may be subjected to this invasive surveillance. I implore you to introduce or support legislation addressing these issues before the next legislative session. Our privacy and bodily autonomy are at stake. Act now to ensure that technology is not weaponized against our fundamental rights.
