Congress must regain trade authority, end harmful tariffs

To: Sen. Klobuchar, Rep. Omar, Sen. Smith

From: A verified voter in Minneapolis, MN

April 8

The recently imposed tariffs by the Trump administration on imported goods are extremely damaging to the national and global economy. These nonsensical tariffs are essentially a multi-trillion dollar tax increase on American businesses and consumers. The stock market has already suffered its worst performance since the pandemic due to fears over these tariffs, and a recession could be on the horizon if they remain in place. While the president has limited authority to levy tariffs during national emergencies, these tariffs are an abuse of that power and an unconstitutional overreach that bypasses Congress's authority over trade policy. I urge you to immediately support and pass veto-proof, bipartisan legislation like the Trade Review Act of 2025 to reclaim Congressional oversight of trade policy and block these destructive tariffs. No single president should have the unilateral power to so severely disrupt the economy in this manner. These tariffs are already causing immense economic harm and must be stopped before the situation deteriorates further. It is Congress's constitutional duty to rein in this executive overreach and restore proper checks and balances over trade authority. I ask that you act swiftly to protect American jobs, consumers and the economy from further damage caused by these reckless tariffs.
