Subject: Expand State Solar Policies to Protect Households from Rising Utility Costs
Dear Governor and Members of the State Legislature,
I am writing to urge you to strengthen state-level solar and consumer energy policies to protect residents from rising utility costs and increasing grid strain.
Households across our state are facing higher electric bills driven by infrastructure expansion, grid congestion, and growing demand from large-scale industrial users. Yet residents have limited ability to control these costs or reduce their exposure to future increases.
State policy plays a critical role in determining whether households have meaningful access to distributed solar and storage. Decisions around rebates, state tax incentives, net metering, interconnection fees, fixed charges, and utility rate design directly affect whether solar is an option for ordinary residents or only for large corporate entities.
Strengthening state solar policies would:
* Reduce peak demand and grid stress
* Improve resilience during outages and extreme weather
* Lower long-term utility costs for participating households
* Protect non-participating ratepayers by reducing the need for expensive grid expansion
* Give residents a practical alternative when utility costs rise
Large infrastructure users and utilities are often protected through guaranteed returns and cost recovery mechanisms. Residents, by contrast, are exposed to rising costs with few tools to respond. State policy should correct this imbalance by ensuring households are not locked into ever-increasing utility bills with no escape.
This is not about mandating energy choices. It is about ensuring residents have access to affordable, voluntary options that reduce risk and increase resilience.
I urge you to support policies that expand access to residential solar and storage, protect fair net metering, prevent punitive fixed charges, and prioritize household energy affordability.
Thank you
