Block the Unauthorized National Mall Arch Project

To: Sen. Curtis, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

May 24

Stop the Trump administration's plan to construct a 250-foot arch near the National Mall without congressional approval. Federal law requires congressional authorization for new monuments on public land. The administration's claim that a century-old authorization covers this project is a legal stretch that two separate lawsuits have already challenged. Congress must not let this stand. The design itself — featuring golden lions and a winged Lady Liberty — has been widely criticized as "Napoleonic" and a dog whistle for white nationalists. On top of that, funding is unresolved, meaning taxpayer money could end up footing the bill for a vanity project that bypassed the democratic process entirely. This sets a dangerous precedent: if this administration can sidestep Congress to reshape the National Mall, no public space is safe from executive overreach. Use your authority to block this project now.
