I am writing as your constituent to urge you to vote NO on the SAVE America Act.
While the stated goal of ensuring only citizens vote is one I share, federal law already prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections — a crime that is actively investigated and prosecuted. The SAVE America Act does not solve a documented problem. It creates a real one.
By requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote and a strict photo ID at the polls, this bill would erect significant barriers for millions of eligible Americans. Studies show that more than 21 million Americans lack ready access to a passport or birth certificate. Millions of women whose married names differ from their birth certificates would face extra hurdles. These are legal voters who would be turned away — not because they are ineligible, but because of paperwork.
The bill’s record backs this concern. Utah conducted a full citizenship review of over two million registered voters and found just one confirmed noncitizen registration and zero instances of noncitizen voting. The problem this bill claims to solve is vanishingly rare. The harm it would cause is not.
The SAVE America Act would also effectively eliminate mail and online voter registration, undermine automatic registration programs, and place massive unfunded burdens on state and local election officials — who could face criminal penalties simply for doing their jobs.
Every eligible American has the right to vote. I urge you to stand with your constituents and vote NO on the SAVE America Act.
