The DISCLOSE Act (Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections) is proposed federal legislation designed to combat "dark money" in U.S. elections.
This bill would require organizations—including super PACs, 501(c)(4) nonprofits, and corporations—that spend over $10,000 in elections to disclose donors who contribute more than $10,000.
It would -
* Prevent the use of intermediary groups or shell corporations (including LLCs) to conceal the true sources of political donations.
* Extend "stand by your ad" requirements to online ads and digital spaces, capturing payments made to social media influencers and requiring organizations to disclose their top funders in political communications.
* Strengthen prohibitions against foreign actors and corporations from spending to influence U.S. elections, including state and local ballot measures.
* Require identical disclosures for organizations that spend money on campaigns to support or oppose federal judicial nominees.
This bill would increase transparency in campaign finances and help restore confidence the elections are not for sell.
