I am writing as a concerned constituent to express deep alarm over the Washington State Department of Licensing’s past practice of sharing personal data with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This practice has placed immigrant families in direct danger and constitutes a serious violation of trust, privacy, and human rights.
It is unacceptable that a state agency entrusted with protecting the public has instead enabled the targeting, detention, and potential deportation of community members—many of whom turned to Washington for safety and stability. The individuals and families affected by this data sharing deserve protection, transparency, and restitution.
I urge you to take immediate legislative action to:
• Ensure the Department of Licensing immediately and permanently halts all data sharing with ICE.
• Draft and pass legislation that explicitly prohibits all state agencies from disclosing personal data to immigration enforcement agencies.
• Create a mechanism to identify and notify individuals whose information was shared.
• Provide compensation, legal support, and protective services to families harmed by these disclosures.
Washington has a responsibility to lead with compassion and justice. We cannot claim to be a sanctuary state if our institutions quietly funnel information to agencies that inflict harm.
Please take this issue seriously and act swiftly. Our communities are watching, and we need your leadership now more than ever.
