An Open Letter

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the so-called “SAVE Act” (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act). While its stated aim is to ensure election integrity, this bill would in fact make it harder for many eligible Americans to vote — particularly married women and others who have changed their legal names. The SAVE Act’s strict documentary proof-of-citizenship requirements would create new bureaucratic hurdles for eligible voters whose government records may not match precisely. Many married women who have taken their spouse’s surname, for instance, could face delays or outright rejection if their citizenship documents (such as birth certificates or passports) are still in their maiden name. Requiring individuals to produce exact-match documentation ignores how common name changes are and imposes an unnecessary burden on voters who have already proven their citizenship through standard registration processes. It is important to note that federal law already makes it illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, and instances of this occurring are exceedingly rare. The SAVE Act targets a problem that does not exist, while potentially disenfranchising millions of legitimate voters — including women, older Americans, people in rural communities, and those born outside hospitals who may lack formal birth records. Rather than imposing new barriers, Congress should focus on strengthening election infrastructure, improving access to registration, and protecting every citizen’s right to participate. Election integrity and voter inclusion can—and must—coexist. I urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and instead support measures that make our democracy stronger by ensuring every eligible American has a fair and accessible path to the ballot box.
