Reject policies criminalizing sanctuary and protect human rights

The Trump administration's proposed immigration policies are extremely concerning and set a dangerous precedent for criminalizing humanitarian acts. Mayor Johnston is right to oppose plans that would jail Americans for providing refuge or sanctuary to undocumented immigrants, which is comparable to the heroic actions of Miep Gies and her husband in protecting Anne Frank during the Holocaust. Such policies promoting mass deportations and punishing those offering aid go against American values of compassion and human rights. I urge you to firmly reject any measures that would turn acts of human decency into criminal offenses. Threatening to imprison citizens like Mayor Johnston who stand up for ethics and morality is an unacceptable overreach of government authority. Please uphold the principles this nation was founded upon by denouncing these draconian proposals that will only breed more fear, injustice and division. Preserving human dignity and freedom of conscience must take precedence over hardline ideological agendas.
