Let’s be absolutely clear: Goode was not an immigrant. She was a peaceful protester. Her death exposes a truth that state and federal officials have worked desperately to avoid acknowledging—ICE’s brutality does not stop at immigrants. It spills into the streets, targets citizens, and crushes anyone who dares to resist or bear witness. This was not a tragic anomaly. It was the inevitable outcome of empowering a federal agency that operates with militarized force, minimal oversight, and total contempt for civil liberties. When armed agents are unleashed on communities with the authority to intimidate, detain, and assault, deaths are not accidents—they are consequences. Your silence in the face of this violence is disgraceful. When peaceful protesters can be killed and dismissed as collateral damage, democracy itself is under attack. If you cannot summon outrage when a nonviolent protester dies at the hands of the state, then your commitment to free speech, assembly, and human rights is meaningless. States are not obligated to cooperate with federal agencies that trample constitutional rights. You have the power to sever cooperation with ICE, deny resources, and publicly condemn this agency’s actions. Choosing not to act is a deliberate political decision—and one that places you on the side of repression. History will remember who spoke up and who hid behind procedure while citizens were brutalized for exercising their rights. Do not pretend this is out of your hands. Do not insult your constituents with hollow statements or performative concern. I expect decisive action, public accountability, and an end to state complicity in ICE’s violence.
