An Open Letter
To: Justices Court
From: A constituent in North Beach, MD

Request for Immediate Intervention in Ongoing Executive Overreach Threatening Federal Workforce and Constitutional Order Dear Chief Justice Roberts and Honorable Justices of the Supreme Court, I write to you as a concerned citizen alarmed by the escalating abuse of executive authority under President Donald J. Trump, specifically the mass termination of federal employees and dismantling of key agencies via executive order. While I am grateful for Judge Susan Illston’s temporary restraining order halting implementation of this policy, I urge the Court to take up this matter on an emergency basis to safeguard the Constitution, uphold the rule of law, and protect the civil service from unlawful political purges. The president’s February 2025 executive order, now blocked, authorized large-scale “reductions in force” across nearly every federal department—from the Department of Veterans Affairs and Social Security Administration to the State Department and AmeriCorps. This sweeping move is a transparent attempt to eliminate independent public institutions and weaken the nonpartisan federal workforce. While the president may seek reorganization of the executive branch, he cannot do so in a way that sidesteps established legal and constitutional safeguards, including statutory requirements for Congressional involvement, due process, and labor protections. Judge Illston rightly noted that the president “must do so in lawful ways” and cannot bypass the legislative process due to political impatience. The Trump administration’s failure to notify Congress, disclose layoff plans, or fill critical administrative oversight boards such as the Merit Systems Protection Board—while simultaneously arguing those boards negate judicial oversight—is a deeply cynical ploy to evade accountability. This is not a debate over bureaucratic streamlining. It is an existential test of our commitment to checks and balances, civil service neutrality, and the foundational principle that no president is above the law. Mass layoffs of public servants based on ideology or convenience rather than legal process echo authoritarian regimes, not democratic governance. I respectfully urge the Supreme Court to: 1. Accept and review this case as a matter of constitutional urgency; 2. Affirm the lower court’s ruling that the executive branch must comply with procedural and statutory requirements governing federal employment; 3. Provide a clear judicial statement reasserting the boundaries of executive power in federal workforce management. The lives of tens of thousands of dedicated public servants, the functionality of vital public agencies, and the strength of our democracy depend on your leadership at this critical moment. Thank you for your service and for defending the Constitution during this extraordinary time.
