I’m writing today because I’m extremely concerned about the federal government’s decision to freeze funding for after-school and summer education programs.
This funding—about $6 to $7 billion—was already approved by Congress and was supposed to be distributed on July 1. It supports things like after-school care, summer learning, teacher training, and programs for English learners and low-income students. In Nevada alone, more than $50 million is being held back, which is about 15 percent of our state’s education budget. That’s a huge hit right before the school year starts.
These programs are not just nice to have. They’re vital. They help kids stay on track academically, give them a safe place to be while parents work, and provide much-needed support services. Delaying these funds puts jobs at risk, cuts programs families depend on, and hurts the kids who need help the most.
I’m asking you to speak up and do everything you can to get these funds released immediately. Congress approved the money. Our schools and communities were counting on it. Politics shouldn’t get in the way of helping students.
Thank you for your time and for standing up for Nevada’s families.
