I am writing as a constituent from Cedar Rapids to express my strong opposition to the proposed elimination of federal TRIO programs, as outlined in the recent budget proposal. These programs are vital in supporting low-income, first-generation, and disabled students in accessing and succeeding in higher education.
TRIO initiatives, including Upward Bound and Student Support Services, have a proven track record of improving student outcomes. Data indicates that participants in the Student Support Services Program achieve higher retention and graduation rates compared to their peers.
In Iowa, TRIO programs have been instrumental in helping students overcome barriers to higher education, contributing to a more educated workforce and stronger communities. Eliminating these programs would not only hinder individual aspirations but also negatively impact our state's economic and social well-being.
As a community college instructor, and a first-generation student from a working class family, I have experienced and witnessed firsthand the importance of TRIO to the success of students. TRIO advisers and tutors provide educational, financial, and emotional support and resources to students in need. TRIO has absolutely nothing to do with "woke ideology," a concept named in the executive order without explanation, clarification, or evidence to support it. Instead, TRIO is a critical lifeline for those very students attempting to achieve the American dream that has otherwise eluded them.
I urge you to advocate for the continuation and adequate funding of TRIO programs. Your support is crucial in ensuring that all Iowans, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to pursue higher education and contribute meaningfully to our society.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
