I am writing to urge you to support legislation that would close the Medicare tax loophole highlighted in a recent ProPublica investigation (https://www.propublica.org/article/medicare-tax-loophole-steve-cohen). As the article explains, certain high-income business owners, including some hedge fund managers, have been able to use an obscure provision of the tax code to avoid paying Medicare taxes on large portions of their income—while most working people pay these taxes on all their wages.
This loophole drains revenue from the Medicare trust fund and contributes to the program’s long-term funding challenges. Closing it could raise significant revenue (an estimated $200 billion+ over a decade) and make the tax system fairer by ensuring that all Americans pay into the system that supports healthcare for older and disabled adults.
Please work with your colleagues to close this loophole and protect the future of Medicare.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
