Follow Pritzker's example: Washington should do no business with El Salvador
To: Gov. Ferguson

Recently, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker took steps to boycott the country of El Salvador as the president and government of El Salvador are complicit in Trump's illegal deportation efforts. Given that Trump has openly defied Supreme Court orders, allegedly used taxpayer money to pay Bukele millions of dollars, asked him to build more high security prisons, and indicated his desire to deport "homegrown criminals" or US citizens next, extreme measures feel appropriate to me. I would like to see Washington state taking similar measures to distance ourselves from this gross violation of human rights. This is both a moral imperative and a move for economic stability: El Salvador is likely to become known as a prison country on the world stage and I cannot imagine companies run by the Salvadorian government or headquartered there will profit (unless it is through Trump's illegal backwater funding channels). I would encourage Washington to direct retirement and investment companies to divest any shares in Salvadorian businesses, as Pritzker has done. Further, I believe state-run agencies should have no ties to or imports from Salvadorian companies or manufacturers. I also believe that you as governor should make a statement to this effect and declare our intentions not to do business with El Salvador in the future while these activities continue. This is a no-regret move. El Salvador does not offer anything to our state we can not obtain elsewhere. Trump and Bukele are deaf to humanitarian rational so the only logical next move is to hit their pocketbooks. Thank you for your consideration.
