I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent reports that the administration is redirecting National Park entrance fee revenues away from our parks. Specifically, internal documents show plans to divert at least $90 million from online park pass sales to fund beautification projects and July Fourth preparations in Washington, D.C.
Our national parks face billions of dollars in backlogged maintenance, crumbling infrastructure, and staffing shortages. Visitors pay entry fees with the explicit understanding that those funds will directly support, preserve, and repair the specific parks they visit. Diverting these revenues to fund centralized D.C. projects is a breach of public trust and neglects the urgent needs of parks across the country.
I strongly support the oversight efforts demanding full transparency from Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. As your constituent, I urge you to use your legislative and oversight authority to:
Demand full accountability of all entry fee revenues collected via online sales.
Oppose any redirection of National Park Service funds for non-park infrastructure or vanity projects.
Ensure recreation fees remain dedicated to local park maintenance and deferred infrastructure backlogs, as originally intended by law.
Our parks are national treasures that require active stewardship, not financial neglect. Thank you for your time and dedication to protecting our public lands, and I look forward to hearing about the steps you are taking on this critical issue.
