Opposing the Stratos Project Data Center Expansion in Box Elder County

To: Gov. Cox, Rep. Christofferson, Sen. Balderree

From: A constituent in Lehi, UT

May 8

I am writing as a concerned resident of Lehi to formally voice my opposition to the massive "hyperscale" data center project recently approved for Box Elder County or any new data centers for that matter . While I understand the desire for economic growth, the sheer scale of the Stratos Project presents an unacceptable risk to Utah's future. At a time when our state is grappling with extreme drought and the critical decline of the Great Salt Lake, approving a facility that could consume more power than the rest of the state combined—and requires millions of gallons of water—is irresponsible. Beyond resource consumption, the projected 16°F heat island effect poses a direct threat to our local ranchers, farmers, and northern Utah's fragile ecology.Furthermore, I am deeply troubled by the lack of transparency and public input in this process. The recent decision to approve this project through the Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA), despite thousands of formal protests from citizens, undermines the trust we place in our elected officials.I urge you to support a moratorium on new hyperscale data center projects until an independent, comprehensive study on their long-term impact on our water, power grid, and air quality can be conducted. Our state’s limited natural resources should be prioritized for its people, not for the massive energy demands of private AI infrastructure.
