On July 6th, NPR released an article from their producer, Anas Baba, in the Gaza Strip titled “Knives, bullets and thieves: the quest for food in Gaza.” This is yet another article detailing how unarmed Gazan civilians starving from hunger must walk for hours to a GHF sight only to be shot at by either the Israeli military or American contractors. Baba later says that when he arrived at a hospital, 200 people were wounded at that same GHF site and 26 were killed.
I mention this article because it is clear that these GHF sites are not working. Not everyone who gathers at these sites actually gets food due to overcrowding and people have to risk either being shot at, being killed, or slowly die from starvation. The UN has even described what is happening at these sites as a real life “hunger games”.
The U.S. cannot be complicit in this. The U.S. should have long ago done more to fight to get aid into Gaza. The U.S. should have fought more to stop our weapons from being used to kill innocent civilians. If that means an arms embargo on Israel until international law is respected, then that is what needs to be done.
