Rein in private overreach in federal agencies, protect democracy

To: Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. Olszewski

From: A constituent in Baltimore, MD

February 3, 2025

Elon Musk's unchecked intrusion into the federal government poses a grave threat to our democratic institutions. As a private citizen with no official role or government oversight, Musk is overstepping boundaries by unilaterally demanding federal employees resign and dictating massive changes to workforce policies. His meddling in sensitive systems like the Treasury's payment infrastructure that disburses trillions of dollars annually is deeply concerning. A billionaire should not wield such power to reshape the government according to his personal whims, especially given his conflicts of interest and lack of public accountability. Musk's authoritarian tactics of abruptly firing civil servants and disrupting essential government operations cannot be tolerated. Urgent action is needed to rein in his overreach and protect the integrity of our public institutions from further destabilization by private interests. The administration must immediately cease granting Musk unchecked influence over federal agencies and personnel decisions.
