Dear Governor Ferguson and Esteemed Legislators,
I am writing to urgently express my deep concern over the rejection of Governor Inslee’s proposed wealth tax—a modest 1% on assets over $100 million—on the grounds that it is “impossible” or “improbable” to implement.
With all due respect, that claim is not only disheartening, it is out of touch with the urgent needs of Washingtonians. While I appreciate the broader efforts behind your budget planning, choosing to furlough state employees—who provide essential services and are already stretched thin—over taxing the ultra-wealthy is a deeply misguided priority.
This wealth tax would impact only a small, exceedingly privileged group of individuals while providing widespread benefits to the rest of us. It could not only prevent harmful furloughs, but also fully fund vital initiatives such as universal free school lunches and the WA Cares Act—programs that working families across our state are depending on.
The truth is simple: the needs of the many must outweigh the convenience of the wealthy few. A 1% tax on extreme wealth is not radical—it is reasonable, responsible, and just.
Moreover, I can assure you that **many more voters would enthusiastically support leaders who stand for equity** and boldly prioritize everyday people over billionaires. Supporting this wealth tax is not just good policy—it’s good politics. We are paying attention, and we are looking for leaders who will stand up for working families, not bend to the influence of wealth and status.
I urge you to reconsider your position on this critical issue and choose the path that invests in our future, protects our public workers, and reflects the values of justice and equity that Washington prides itself on
