Reconsider terror financing bill's due process implications
To: Rep. Fischbach
From: A constituent in Stephen, MN
November 19
The proposed Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act is concerning and should not be passed in its current form. While providing tax relief for Americans unlawfully detained abroad is a noble goal, the provisions to label organizations as "terrorist supporting" and unilaterally revoke their tax-exempt status raise significant civil liberties issues. Such determinations require robust due process protections beyond mere IRS designation. Furthermore, granting any administration regardless of party the broad authority to target organizations based on perceived support could easily be abused for political purposes against dissenting or opposition voices. I urge thoughtful reconsideration of this bill to strike an appropriate balance between security concerns and constitutional freedoms.
