Congress's constitutional role as check on executive power

To: Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd, Rep. Manning

From: A constituent in Pleasant Garden, NC

December 19

The President does not possess unilateral authority over Congress. The Constitution established a system of checks and balances, with the legislative branch holding essential powers like approving nominees, controlling the budget, and the ability to override a presidential veto with a two-thirds majority vote in both chambers. Congress should pass a budget regardless of what the president or president-elect has stated. Congress is a co-equal branch of government, designed to provide oversight and prevent any single person or entity from amassing unchecked power. Legislators should act independently in the nation's interests, not merely defer to the President's agenda. This separation of powers is a core tenet of American democracy.
