I write to you today as a deeply concerned citizen to voice my unequivocal and emphatic opposition to the so-called “SAVE Act.” This legislation is an alarming attack on the fundamental principles of our democracy, one that risks disenfranchising countless eligible voters under the guise of election integrity. Let me be clear: this bill is not about protecting our elections — it is about suppressing the voices of lawful American voters.
The SAVE Act, which mandates burdensome documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, is a solution in desperate search of a problem. Numerous studies, audits, and court rulings have consistently confirmed that voter fraud, particularly in the form of non-citizen voting, is statistically negligible in the United States. Enacting legislation that would throw up barriers for millions of eligible citizens is a dangerous overreach that undermines the very freedom our country stands for.
Let us not ignore the profound and disproportionate harm this act would inflict on vulnerable populations — including the elderly, low-income citizens, students, Native Americans, and naturalized citizens — many of whom may not readily have access to the narrowly defined documents this bill demands. It threatens to silence voices that already face systemic barriers to civic participation.
Further, the SAVE Act is a thinly veiled attempt to sow distrust in our electoral process and perpetuate harmful myths about widespread voter fraud. This legislation does not protect democracy; it erodes it. Rather than creating unnecessary obstacles to voting, Congress should be championing policies that expand access to the ballot box, ensure every voice is heard, and restore faith in our democratic institutions.
I urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to reject the SAVE Act and stand with the American people in defense of our constitutional right to vote. History will remember who defended democracy and who allowed it to be undermined.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I expect your leadership in preserving the sacred right to vote for all Americans. I look forward to your prompt reply.
