I am writing to express my strong opposition to the recently approved Congressional district map by the North Carolina State Senate. This redistricting effort, which passed by a narrow 25-20 vote, is a blatant attempt to manipulate our state's political landscape for partisan gain. The proposed changes to Districts 1 and 3 are particularly concerning. By altering these districts, the map effectively diminishes the voting power of a significant Black population in District 1, raising serious questions about racial discrimination in our electoral process. Furthermore, the open admission by Republicans that this map is designed to benefit former President Trump in the upcoming midterms is a clear indication of its partisan nature. The projected outcome of this redistricting - giving Republicans an advantage in 11 out of 14 districts - is a gross misrepresentation of our state's diverse political landscape. While redistricting for partisan advantage may be legal in North Carolina, it does not make it ethically right or beneficial for our democracy. I urge you to reject this proposed Congressional map when it comes before the House of Representatives. Our state deserves fair representation that reflects the true diversity of its constituents, not a gerrymandered map that serves the interests of one political party. The integrity of our democratic process is at stake, and it is your responsibility to protect it. We need a redistricting process that prioritizes community interests and fair representation over political gain. I implore you to stand against this partisan redistricting effort and advocate for a more equitable and democratic approach to drawing our Congressional districts. The future of North Carolina's representation in Congress depends on your commitment to fairness and equal representation for all citizens.
