An Open Letter
To: Sen. Tillis, Rep. Harris, Sen. Budd
From: A verified voter in Waxhaw, NC
June 12
As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the U.S. Postal Service's proposed rule that would allow the agency to refuse delivering mail ballots in states that decline to surrender voter rolls to the federal government. This rule represents an unconstitutional intrusion into state election administration. The Constitution reserves electoral authority to the states, and Congress deliberately established the Postal Service as an independent agency to protect it from political interference. This proposal directly violates that independence and our constitutional structure. Take action now to oppose this and any other attempts to federalize elections. The practical impact of this rule would be devastating. The rule's vague language creates uncertainty about how ballot screening would work, yet implementation would impose enormous costs and chaos on election officials with fewer than 150 days to comply. States would need to create new voter lists, potentially redesign ballots, and coordinate with federal agencies—an administrative nightmare that would disrupt elections across the country. This proposed rule would disproportionately harm millions of voters like us who need flexible voting methods - those who travel frequently, those who are old enough that they can't drive anymore, those with mobility issues who find it difficult to leave the house - to cite just a few examples. The rule is also based on a false premise. Illegal noncitizen voting is vanishingly rare. Election security experts have consistently found mail voting to be secure and reliable. This proposal appears designed not to enhance security but to suppress votes, particularly among groups who depend on mail balloting. The Postal Service was established as a founding institution to protect democratic participation. President George Washington himself signed legislation establishing it as essential to our democracy. We cannot allow it to become a tool for partisan election manipulation. I urge you to publicly oppose this rule publicly and to support legislation protecting the Postal Service's independence and mail voting access. Democracy depends on your leadership.
