Safeguard civil liberties in protest investigations

To: Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd, Rep. Edwards

From: A constituent in Candler, NC

March 18

The federal investigation into potential terrorism law violations related to the Columbia University protests is deeply concerning from a civil liberties perspective. While the government has legitimate interests in maintaining public safety, conflating peaceful protest activities with terrorism risks undermining constitutionally protected rights like freedom of speech and assembly. The harsh demands placed on Columbia, such as banning masks and placing academic departments under receivership, seem like an overreach that could chill free expression on campus. We should be fostering an environment where diverse viewpoints can be expressed and debated openly, not cracking down on dissent through heavy-handed measures. The Department of Justice should tread carefully to avoid violating First Amendment protections. Lawful protests and criticism of government policies, even if controversial or unpopular, are core democratic values that must be safeguarded. I urge a measured approach that upholds civil liberties while addressing legitimate security concerns through proper channels.
