Need for a protected political class is now

To: Sen. Moody, Rep. Moskowitz, Sen. Scott

June 8

As your constituent, I urge Congress to enact legislation establishing political affiliation and lawful political association as protected classes under federal civil rights law. America's strength comes from the free exchange of ideas. Yet increasing political polarization has led to discrimination against citizens based solely on their party registration, political beliefs, campaign participation, or lawful political expression. Across the country, Americans report being denied employment opportunities, fired from jobs, excluded from organizations, harassed, or subjected to unequal treatment because of their political views rather than their qualifications or conduct. Federal law already protects individuals from discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, age, and disability. Similar protections should be extended to political affiliation and lawful political activity. No American should fear losing a job, housing opportunity, educational opportunity, or access to public accommodations merely because they are a Democrat, Republican, Independent, Libertarian, Green Party member, or supporter of any other lawful political movement. I respectfully ask Congress to draft legislation that: • Prohibits discrimination based on political affiliation or lawful political activity in employment, housing, lending, education, and public accommodations. • Protects citizens from retaliation for lawful political participation, campaign involvement, or civic engagement. • Preserves First Amendment rights by distinguishing protected political expression from discriminatory conduct. • Provides reasonable exemptions for political parties, campaigns, elected officials, and ideological organizations when political beliefs are directly related to their mission. America cannot remain united if citizens are punished for exercising their constitutional right to participate in the democratic process. Protecting Americans from political discrimination will help reduce division, encourage civic participation, and strengthen faith in our institutions. I urge Congress to act and ensure that all Americans receive equal treatment under the law regardless of their political beliefs or affiliations
