The Medicaid program provides essential health coverage for millions of low-income Americans, yet bureaucratic red tape creates unnecessary barriers to accessing care. Many states impose punitive work requirements, asset tests, and other burdensome rules that lead to eligible people losing their Medicaid coverage. These policies do nothing to improve health outcomes or reduce costs. Instead, they cruelly punish vulnerable individuals struggling to make ends meet. It is crucial that Congress acts to rein in these harmful policies by enacting legislation like the Medicaid Opportunity Act. This bill would prohibit states from instituting work requirements, asset tests, and other restrictive eligibility criteria that undermine Medicaid's core mission of providing a health care safety net. Stripping coverage from those in need is unconscionable and counterproductive. I urge you to support common-sense reforms that strengthen Medicaid and protect access to care for our nation's most vulnerable citizens.
