I am writing you today to oppose SF5050/HF5045!
• Proof of citizenship to register and vote
SF5050 requires voters to present specific citizenship documents to register, vote early, vote absentee, or vote on Election Day. These requirements go far beyond current Minnesota law and reflect the same restrictive approach as the federal SAVE Act. In MN, if you have a REAL ID this may not be sufficient to prove citizenship because REAL IDs can be given to noncitizens such as those who are Green Card holders or Visa holders. You would need a separate document, such as your U.S. passport, certified birth certificate and qualifying photo ID, or your naturalization or citizenship certificate.
• New barriers that could stop eligible voters from being counted
Our 'same day voter registration' process would be immediately repealed and provisional ballots would be put in its place.
Under SF5050, voters who would previously have been allowed same‑day registrationare instead required to:
cast a provisional ballot, and
return within one week after Election Day to complete the process, or lose their vote.
For working Minnesotans, seniors, students, people with disabilities, and rural or tribal voters, this is a serious barrier.
• Mandatory photo ID and expanded voter challenges
The bill creates a new voter ID card and adds strict photo ID requirements tied to state and federal databases, increasing the risk of errors, wrongful challenges, and voters being turned away.
Minnesota already has secure elections that successfully use same‑day registration. Anyone who tries to vote illegally has been caught and prosecuted. This bill would replace our proven system with red tape that risks silencing eligible voters, all without evidence of a real problem. Who does this benefit? NOT us.
