House Bill 8 threatens the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ students and families in Ohio. This harmful legislation would require schools to notify parents about any perceived changes to a student's gender identity or mental health, essentially forcing educators to "out" LGBTQ+ students without their consent. This violates student privacy and creates an unsafe environment where students cannot openly discuss personal matters with trusted teachers and counselors. Furthermore, the vague definitions of "sexuality" content in the bill open the door for censorship of educational materials related to gender, sexuality, and diverse family structures. This will limit access to medically accurate and age-appropriate sex education. Ohio already has processes in place for parental review of curricula - this overreaching bill is redundant and unnecessary. LGBTQ+ students face disproportionately high rates of bullying, depression, and suicide. Stripping away their safe spaces and trusted support systems at school will only exacerbate these issues. All students deserve to feel accepted, supported, and able to learn free from discrimination. I urge you to oppose House Bill 8 and protect the rights, safety, and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ youth in Ohio schools. Our top priority should be creating an inclusive, affirming environment where every student can thrive.
