Urgent: Require Humane Standards Before Funding I.C.E.

To: Sen. Kim, Sen. Booker, Rep. Kean

From: A constituent in Basking Ridge, NJ

January 30

As a concerned citizen, I urge you to take immediate action to ensure that clear, enforceable, and humane standards are established for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) operations before any additional funding is considered. Recent I.C.E. actions have caused unnecessary suffering, widespread hardship for families, and the tragic deaths of at least ten residents. These outcomes are unacceptable and underscore the urgent need for reforms that prioritize legal protections, humane treatment, transparency, and accountability. For these reasons, I respectfully request that Congress withhold further funding for I.C.E. until such standards are not only created but fully implemented. Our nation’s core values—justice, compassion, and respect for the rule of law—demand an immigration system that upholds the dignity and rights of every individual. I also strongly oppose any efforts to increase or continue funding for I.C.E. The agency has repeatedly disregarded existing laws, undermining democratic principles and the constitutional protections guaranteed by the Fourth Amendment. Agencies that fail to follow current legal requirements cannot be expected to comply with new ones. Providing additional resources to an organization that operates outside the law only perpetuates injustice and weakens our legal framework. I urge you to reject any proposals for increased I.C.E. funding and to place the Constitution above political pressure. Thank you for your attention to these critical matters. I trust in your leadership to act with integrity and to protect the fundamental values on which our nation was built.
