Urgent Action Needed: Ban Billionaire Election Buying in the U.S.
Dear Senator Alsobrooks, Senator Van Hollen, and Representative Hoyer,
I am a constituent from North Beach, Maryland, and I am urging you to take bold action to curb billionaire influence in U.S. elections—similar to Australia’s groundbreaking bill that limits billionaire political spending to just $20,000. Such legislation would ensure that no one ultra-wealthy individual can single-handedly buy our elections or drown out the voices of ordinary Americans.
Right now, unelected billionaires like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and Harlan Crow are manipulating our courts, controlling media narratives, and dictating public policy—from tax loopholes to climate denial to the dangerous, authoritarian framework of Project 2025. Their dark money and corporate lobbying networks have reduced our democracy to a pay-to-play system, where billionaires and special interests dominate while the needs of everyday Americans go unheard.
The U.S. now appears on multiple international human rights watchlists because of this corporate-theocratic takeover. We are being ruled by a shadow government of donors, think tanks, and extremists who are accountable to no one but themselves. This is not just a campaign finance issue—it’s a threat to national security, democratic survival, and fundamental human rights.
I urge you to:
• Introduce or support legislation that imposes strict caps on campaign contributions and super PAC spending, modeled on Australia’s $20K limit.
• Push for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and restore real campaign finance rules.
• Investigate and expose dark money networks that fund MAGA extremism and coordinated attacks on civil rights and democratic institutions.
The billionaire stranglehold on our democracy must be broken before it’s too late. I ask you to lead the fight to ensure our elections are not sold to the highest bidder and that democracy is once again a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
