An Open Letter
To: Rep. Pocan
From: A constituent in Fitchburg, WI
November 5
I am writing as your constituent in Fitchburg to ask you not to support Representative Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker of the House, both in the Democratic caucus vote and on the House floor.
Voters just handed Democrats control of the House. That was not a vote for business as usual. People in Wisconsin and across the country are struggling with the cost of living, and they are watching to see whether this majority will actually fight for them. They need a Speaker who matches that urgency.
Representative Jeffries is not that leader. His centrist approach has too often led to early compromises and a party that plays defense. He is also one of AIPAC's closest allies in the House and has benefited from its donor network. That influence shows in his steady support for sending billions of our tax dollars to Israel.
I do not want to keep paying for Israel's war, and I am far from alone. Israel does not act like an ally. It acts like a grown kid living in their parents' house who never pays a bill and ignores the house rules. Our support comes with no conditions, and American taxpayers carry the cost. That money belongs here, on health care, housing, and lowering costs for working families.
We need a Speaker who will push bold progressive policies and not apologize for them. That means affordable health care, real protections for workers, an end to blank checks for foreign wars, and getting big money like AIPAC's out of our politics.
You helped lead the Progressive Caucus and have spoken up for these values for years. Please use that voice now. Push for a progressive candidate for Speaker, and do not give Representative Jeffries your vote. I would appreciate knowing how you plan to vote.
